Loving the skin you’re in is pretty difficult when it’s covered in blackheads and pimples. It’s like asking someone to appreciate the view of a tropical island when they’re boiling to death in a volcano.
The skin is a delicate instrument, and even the slightest change in your diet can turn it from smooth and supple to outright awry. Even a few too many choccy biccies could produce an outbreak of spots that’ll take weeks to remove.

So what can you do to emulate them and love the skin you’re in?
Gaining clear pores feels like an impossible dream for some. But cast aside the snake oil they sell on the high street. Those lotions and potions promising “miraculous effects”, “overnight results” and a thousand more platitudes are (as a rule) about as likely to help your skin as sandpaper.
But some cleansing rituals are a cut above the rest. If you can find the cream of the crop (ha!) many of your skin troubles will be over. So shop around – who knows what will work for your skin.
Night time cleanse
In the night, your skin will become drier and less able to cope with the elements as you sleep – so it’s time to figure out how to fix yourself up.
First off, remove all your makeup before you head to your kip. That way, the cosmetics that could agitate your skin will be long gone. You won’t wakeup with extra spots.
Next, moisturise thoroughly. This should preferably be all of your body, but your face is the most important area. After all, it’ll be the only part of your body not covered.
Once you’ve completed your regime, you’ll be ready to hop into bed without worrying about waking up with skin like an arid desert.
Literal beauty sleep
People have been discussing beauty sleep since it was in fairy tales, and with good reason.
Scientists have found that the opposite sex will find you markedly less attractive without your average eight hours. Moreover, a lack of sleep dries up the pores and leaves you with flaky skin.
To help yourself nod off, avoid your phone, laptop or the telly a few hours before bed. Crack open a book instead and you’ll head for the land of nod in no time.

Stress is horrible. It has a knock-on effect on almost every part of your life, including your health. You might be aware of the effect stress can have on your body, such as your heart and other major organs. But, your skin is just as prone to the negative effects of stress. It increases the output of hormones like cortisol that leaves the skin oiler and unable to fight harmful bacteria.
Watch The Sun
The sun is great, isn’t it? It is bright, hot and improves your mood markedly. How could anyone not like the sun? Well, it is incredibly bad for your skin. If you are planning to go on holiday, there is no question that you would wear protection. But, the skin is as much at harm when you are not on holiday. Protect your skin from the sun
Don’t make the mistake of thinking that getting a tan is more important than protecting your skin from sun damage. Did you know that a high percentage of changes you see to your skin as you age are due to spending too much time in the sun?
To keep your skin safe from the sun and help to prevent aging, make sure to limit the time you spend in the sun during peak hours – 10am to 4pm. Whenever you go out in the sun, make sure always to protect yourself by wearing a hat, as well as a high factor sunscreen.
During the spring and fall, when the sun’s heat is much lower, don’t forget to still apply sunscreen or wear a foundation or moisturiser with an SPF factor of 15 or above.
Cleanse and exfoliate
Two of the most important things you can do to keep your skin healthy is cleanse and exfoliate on a regular basis. Cleansing your skin removes makeup and dirt from your skin and exfoliating gets rid of dry skin by removing dead skin cells and making room for fresh, new skin cells to grow.
Choose a chemical-free natural cleanser and cleanse your skin each morning and evening – this will reduce the bacteria and dirt on your skin. Three times a week, follow this by exfoliating with a rich exfoliating scrub – this will remove all the old skin cells and give your skin a fresh look.
Invest in an anti-aging moisturiser
To keep your skin healthy, you need to give it the adequate hydration that it needs – the best way to do this is by moisturising regularly. To help keep your skin as healthy and young looking as possible, it is a good idea to swap to an anti-aging moisturiser once you are in your late twenties.

If you smoke, be warned that smoking can significantly increase how quickly your skin ages. If you want your skin to stay as young as possible, ideally, you should give up smoking immediately.
Alcohol is another substance that can lead to premature aging – too much alcohol on a regular basis and it will have terrible effects on your skin. Monitor your drinking and aim to have no more than three alcoholic drinks each week.
As well as watching what substance go into your body, it is also important to eat a clean, healthy diet. You should aim to eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as lots of lean meat, fish and poultry and should avoid foods high in unhealthy fats and sugar.

However, sometimes we’ll have a breakout or a skin problem that won’t allow us to look our best. Here are a few top ways that you can disguise or improve flawed skin and get back to feeling great about yourself.
First we need to look at the ways in which we can prevent our skin from having issues in the first place. Look at ways to try and tackle your skin problems before they become too bad. This will ensure that you can keep on top of your skincare and avoid breakouts and skin problems in the future. Some top preventative tips include the below.
Drink more water
Drinking water is the obvious tip here. It will help keep your skin healthy and hydrated and it also aids concentration. If you are busy at work all day then drinking water or juice will help improve your mood, concentration and your skin.
Have a break from makeup
Having a break from makeup sometimes can be a good thing. We all love beauty products and looking our best, but sometimes our skin just needs to breathe! Giving our skin just a little time out can sometimes make all the difference.
Clean your brushes
This is so important. Cleaning your makeup brushes can help stop the spread of bacteria and spots. Germs and bacteria can breed on our brushes and after a period of time they will collect dead skin and grease. Wash them with a little warm soapy water or buy some makeup brush cleaner.
Throw away old makeup
Even if an item of makeup is your favorite, you still need to throw it away when it gets old. Think about what you are putting on your face or near your eyes.
Tattoos and scars are one area where it is important to take care. If you have a tattoo that you now regret, all is not lost. You can either cover it up or take some real action to remove it. A simple google search of terms like tattoo removal in Chicago or wherever you are based will give you a good starting point. You don’t need to feel like you are stuck with a tattoo that leaves your skin flawed. There is usually a solution that will help your confidence.
Breakouts of acne can be annoying, painful and embarrassing. Try using tea tree products on your skin and avoiding scrubbing areas of acne. Gently dab any areas that are affected and use a clean cloth each time. This will prevent the acne spreading to other areas of your body and halt the bacterias breeding.

Just lately, I’ve had many compliments on the way my skin looks. I’ve had problems with my skin in the past, so I’m absolutely thrilled to have found a skincare routine that works for me.
Of course makeup has had a hand in helping me to look flawless, but I’m only human! Here are my tips for achieving flawless looking skin every day:
I Cleanse, Tone, and Moisturise Twice a Day
In the morning I cleanse with a good facial wash, before toning and applying my moisturiser. If I’m not doing anything, I’ll leave it at that. However, most of the time I’ll apply my makeup over the moisturiser. My moisturiser contains an SPF, which helps to protect my skin from sun damage whether it’s sunny or raining outside. Before bed I do the same routine, sometimes using a different cleanser. I keep this routine consistent, and try to do it no matter how tired (and sometimes drunk) I am.
I Only Ever Use Products Suited to My Skin Type
The products I use aren’t those that work for a celebrity, or somebody I know. They are products that work for me. Everybody is different, so we need to find individual products suited to our skin types. Many people make the mistake of thinking that because something worked with their best friend, it’ll work with them. This isn’t the case! You need to work out your skin type, and then find products to suit it. If you have combination skin, you can use different products to reflect that. Using products that aren’t suited to your skin type will make your skin worse, and do more bad than good.
I Exfoliate Twice Per Week
I love exfoliating. It helps to get rid of dead skin cells, gives me a healthy glow, and leaves my skin feeling soft and supple. I do this twice a week, as that’s what the product I’m using recommends. In some cases, you may only need to use yours once per week. If it’s a wash with scrub incorporated, you may be required to use it every day. Go by the manufacturers instructions and test what works for you.
I Use a Facemask Once Per Week
Face masks are a real treat, and I try to be consistent in using one once per week. I try to do this at the same time and on the same day each week so I don’t forget. If I’m in a hurry, I’ll use one of those face masks made from cloth, that you simply unfold and lay over the face. These make the least mess, are easy to dispose of, and still leave my skin feeling great afterwards! If I’m feeling adventurous, I’ll use a clay mask or a peel off. However, I’m usually removing bits of mask days later.
I Apply a Pore Strip When Needed
Pore strips are the answer to blackheads, ladies. Those annoying little grease blobs stuck underneath the skin, making pores look oily and open. You can try to pop these, but you’ll never get rid of as many as a pore strip can. All you do is apply to a damp nose, for instance, leave to dry and then peel off. Looking at the strip afterwards can be very satisfying when you see just how many you’ve got rid of!

I Use Clever Makeup Techniques
As I said before, makeup does play a role in my seemingly flawless skin. I still have the odd imperfection, after all, and there’s not much else I can do. This means I turn to makeup! Here are some of the techniques I use on a daily basis:
- I always use a primer after my moisturiser if I’m going to wear makeup. This stops the makeup from affecting my skin too much, helps to cover up imperfections, and makes the makeup last longer!
- I apply a colour correcting concealer under my eyes, which helps to disguise dark circles when I layer over my foundation.
- I apply my foundation with a good sponge or brush, making sure it’s expertly blended right down to my neck. No tide lines for me!
- I apply a regular concealer under my eyes to wake them up.
- I sometimes use highlighter and bronzer to contour my face, especially if I’m going out. The way you do this will depend on your face shape!
- If my skin is a little greasy one day, I’ll dab over a powder to soak it up.
- I apply instant tan occasionally, so I have more of a healthy glow on days when I don’t look it.
I Take My Makeup Off Properly at the End of the Day
You know I cleanse, tone, and moisturise twice a day. However, none of that matters if you aren’t taking your makeup off properly first and foremost. Cleanse twice at once if that’s what you have to do to remove every last scrap of makeup. Going to bed with makeup on your skin will mean you wake up with more imperfections. You could also end up layering new makeup over old makeup – gross!
I Nip Problems in the Bud Before They Get Worse
Occasionally, I’ll experience things like dark spots on my face. I make sure I nip these problems in the bud before they get worse, by doing my research on sites like http://www.healthyskinsolutions.com. I never ignore a problem, and try to eradicate it as quickly as possible!
I Monitor My Skin for Changes Regularly
Skin changes from season to season, so I monitor mine regularly for any changes. If I do notice changes, I change the products I use accordingly. My skin will usually get dryer in winter, for instance, so I’ll start using a richer moisturiser. However, using the same moisturiser in summer will break me out in spots. Sometimes, my skin will change for no reason at all. You need to be vigilant if you want to get flawless skin!

Let’s face it, the cold weather has it out for our skin. It makes us look and feel dry, tight, flaky and chapped. And when our skin is not at its best we feel uncomfortable and self-conscious. Well, we think it is high time that we fight back against the cold weather. If you want to join our army of glowing skinned ladies this winter, here is our step-by-step guide to achieving soft skin now.
Step 1: Warm, short shower
It is tempting during winter to turn the temperature up high and to stay in the shower for a long time in order to warm up. However, this is a bad skin habit to get into. The longer and hotter the shower is the more moisture will be stripped from your skin. And the cold weather exacerbate this by taking out even more moisture from your skin. Stick to a shower of no longer than ten minutes and make sure the temperature is just warm, not hot.

Step 2: Exfoliate
In the winter, it is important not to exfoliate too roughly. Your skin will already be delicate from being in the cold, so don’t add to the problem by scrubbing too hard. However, it is important to keep it up as part of your beauty regime, even in winter, to ensure glowing skin. Gently exfoliate in a circular motion using a light exfoliating sponge. Choose products that describe themselves as gentle exfoliants. If you have particularly sensitive skin, you may wish to try a natural exfoliant like honey and sugar or baking soda.
Step 3: Hair removal
You should always shave your legs after you have exfoliated. Exfoliating with remove dead skin cells from the surface of your skin making it softer and easier to shave. However, even by exfoliating first, shaving can still lead to dry and irritated legs. If this is the case for you, something like a laser hair removal device might be a better option. You may wish to read a review of this hair removal product while you are researching. But if you are comfortable shaving in the shower a good tip to avoid razor rash is to add baby oil to your skin before applying shaving cream. The oil creates a coating on your skin to protect it from the sharp razor.

Step 4: Apply moisture
When you are out of the shower, pat your skin dry rather than rub, as this can irritate the surface of your skin. Also, apply moisturiser to your body when it is still slightly damp will help seal in the moisture. Opt for products that are oil based as these will lock in the moisture for longer and will protect your skin against the cold weather.
Step 5: Stay hydrated
It is important to drink plenty of water in winter to ensure that your skin is nourished and hydrated. You should be drinking at least 2 litres of water per day. If you want to kill two birds with one stone, drink herbal teas like peppermint or fennel, to keep you hydrated and warm at the same time.

It will soon become a habit to look for recipes and meals that contain lots of yummy fresh fruit and veg. Sun Safe Skin
We love the sun! We countdown the days until the sunny months arrive, book ourselves on super sunny holidays and even fake it with sunbeds and tanning lotions. A tan looks great on young skin, but it can soon wear out older skin. If you want to slow down the aging process then you need to be more sun safe. Get the healthy amount of Vitamin D for your skin by spending some time in the sunshine, but make sure you are protecting it too. Cleansing, Toning and Moisturising

Taking Care of Your Skin in Winter: Do’s
- Use a body brush to keep lymphatic drainage working, your blood flow pumping, and your skin soft and supple.
- Exfoliate with a body scrub 2-3 times per week to rid your body of dead skin cells and instantly make it appear brighter.
- Make sure you use a moisturising soap or body wash, and not one that dries out your skin. Dove is a great brand!
- Pat yourself dry, never rub.
- Apply a creamy body butter or moisturiser immediately after drying, or your skin could feel tight and sore.
- Exfoliate your face twice a week with a facial exfoliator.
- Consider switching your moisturiser for one especially made for dry skin.
- If you have lines and wrinkles around the eyes, use an eye cream.
- Use a hydrating face mask once a week to give your collagen and cells and extra boost for plumpness and brightness.
- Always wear gloves to protect your hands, and apply a hand cream regularly.
- Use a cuticle oil to moisturise and protect your nails and skin around your nails.
- Always include your feet in your exfoliating and moisturising routine.
- Exfoliate dry skin from your lips with a lip scrub or an old toothbrush.
- Apply a thick lip balm every night before bed, and use one in the day when you can.
Taking Care of Your Skin in Winter: Don’ts
- Spend longer than 10 minutes in a shower.
- Try to keep your water warm, not too hot, as this can strip your skin of it’s natural oils.
- Use a male’s shaving cream. Buy a shaving cream especially for women to have silky smooth legs.
- Wait to moisturise after a bath or shower. This can really wreak havoc on your skin.
- Use a face wash with harsh ingredients. Use a gentle cleanser in the winter months, like one from DermalSense.
- Use the wrong products on your skin. Always use products suited to your skin type, and remember that your skin type can change with the seasons. Using a dry cleanser on oily skin can cause big problems, so make sure you pay attention to the changes.
- Apply lipstick to chapped lips, as this can make them even worse and cause them to look old. Always exfoliate lips before applying anything.
