It seems like there are very few people in the Western world who don’t know who Katy Perry (originally known as Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson) is. The singer/songwriter has, over the last 10 years, risen from a bright star with unfulfilled potential into one of the biggest and most adored global pop superstars. Her road to music and success started when she was a youngster singing Christian gospel music. Then she left home to seek out something different.
It was anything but easy in the beginning and Katy had to deal with many roads to many of the roads to success leading to dead ends. That was until, surprisingly enough, she got dropped from a record deal with Columbia Records in ’06. This was the catalyst for the turning point in her professional life. Columbia’s publicity executive at the time was Angelica Cob-Baehler. She realised the mistake that Columbia Records had made dropping Ms Perry and underhandedly made a passionate plea to Virgin Records boss at the time Jason Flom. Ms Cob-Baehler recommended that Katy would be a big star and that Virgin Records should not pass up the opportunity.
It was soon after that Katy signed to Capitol Music Group, the company that resulted in the Virgin and Columbia merger, and this led to the writing, recording and release of One Of The Boys, her debut album under her new stage name. There was 3 globally successful singles released from that album that you undoubtedly remember flooding all media outlets – Ur So Gay, I Kissed A Girl and Hot N Cold.
Following an extensive tour in support of her album, she also found time to record an MTV unplugged album, an album collaborating with production team The Matrix and make a number of appearances on other peoples albums, such as Timbaland and Gavin Rossdale. She released the first single from her second major label album, Teenage Dream in ’10 – called California Gurls. The song featured the West Coast rap legend Snoop Doggy Dogg and was a smash hit. This was followed by the singles Teenage Dream, Firework, Last Friday Night and One That Got Away. As with the last album, she toured for a long time round the world and also made her first appearance in a movie, voicing a female smurf in The Smurfs film.
Cut to 2013 when Ms Perry released one of the big hits of the summer, Roar. This was followed by Prism, her third studio album. Prism was supposed to be a lot darker than it turned out, as the sound and structure was inspired by the Swedish dance scene. The songs Unconditionally and Dark Horse were also released as singles before the end of 2013.
Katy Perry begins the firstleg of her 3rd world tour, The Prismatic World Tour. The tour starts in Belfast as the Odyssey Arena and features support from quirky pop act Icona Pop. Ms Perry will also be stopping at Glasgow’s amazing Hydro. If you are a big fan based in London you will want to get Katy Perry tickets at the O2, as that will undoubtedly be a highlight of the whole tour.
If you’re a bit of a rock chick and like to turn heads with your badass outfit choices, we salute you. The rock chick look is SO now, with models all over the catwalk strutting down the runway in black leather and heavy jewellery. However, sometimes rock chick style outfits can seem to lack a little in something…accessories! Just because you’re channeling a ‘laid back, I don’t give a funk’ attitude, doesn’t mean you can forget your accessories. They totally make or break an outfit! Here’s a rock chick’s guide to accessorising:
Heavy Metal Jewellery
For rock chick accessorising, you simply must wear tons of heavy metal jewellery. This means chunky ear cuffs so it looks as if you have about 20 piercings, spiky necklaces and bracelets, and just about anything that makes a statement. Forget dainty bracelets and rings – if it ain’t big and bold, you can’t wear it!
Stack Rings and Bracelets
Stack plenty of rings and bracelets high on your fingers and wrists. It doesn’t matter if they match – do rock chicks care? No they don’t! Pile ‘em on, both hands and both wrists if you like!
Drip in Leather
Leather is the rock chick material to be seen in. Leather joggers are huge this year, as are leather look jeans and disco pants. Buy yourself a staple leather jacket, leather skirt, leather t-shirt – just make sure you have something of everything in leather! Don’t forget about the shinola leather collection either.
Experiment With Pattern and Texture
Looking funky and interesting like a rock chick involves experimenting. Sure, sometimes you’ll get it wrong…but that is what it’s all about! Fearne Cotton admits that she gets it wrong at least once a week, as she gets papped going in to work at Radio 1. Mix different patterns and textures to make a big impact in your rock chick outfits! Fur, suede, tartan, floral, polka dot – anything you like.
A rock chick must have a pair of chunky boots in her collection; it’s the law. White chunky sandals and boots with mesh socks looks amazing on!
As briefly mentioned, mesh is a huge trend this season, so any mesh items you find should be snapped up immediately!
You shouldn’t forget, you also accessorise with your nails and makeup! Black nails are of course the most rock chick way to go, but you can also choose a metallic ‘gun metal’ style, or grey.
Practice smokey eyes using Youtube tutorials to get the look spot on, without piling too much on (sorry Taylor Momsen, it’s a bit much for us). You’ll still look like a badass rock chick, but you’ll turn heads for all of the right reasons!
If you want to channel this look this season, make sure you accessorise properly by following our guide. Bear in mind that only girls who want to turn some heads should follow our advice. Happy accessorising!

The retro look can be a difficult look to pull off. Some women don’t know where to start with it, and others try it out but get it all wrong. All things retro/vintage are roaring back into fashion this year, so we thought we’d help you rock this look with confidence, using our fashion and beauty tips. Enjoy!
Find the Perfect Red Lippy
The retro look is all about finding the perfect red lippy – there is no other colour you should be seen rocking! There are a few classic reds out there, but we highly recommend Ruby Woo by MAC. This lipstick suits all skin tones and even helps to make your teeth look whiter. Use a red lip liner to get the application spot on, and make sure your lips are smooth and moisturised!
Practice the Victory Curl
The victory curl is a well known hairstyle from era’s gone by, so if you want to rock this look you should try it out. There are many different variations you can try, and all kind of tutorials on Youtube for you to practice from!
Do it Big
Big hair is also a great nod to the vintage/retro look, so get some volumizing mousse into your tresses after washing, blow dry your hair upside down, pop in your hair rollers, take them out after a few hours, shake in some root powder, and give your hair a good old tousle!
Try a Flirty Flick
The cat-eye flick is a classic retro look, but it takes a lot of practice to perfect. We recommend using a black liquid liner, and starting off small (otherwise you could risk looking like Amy Winehouse).
Powder Your Nose
Retro/vintage ladies are known for their perfectly preened skin, all porcelain and delicate looking. Find the perfect foundation for your skin by getting a makeover at a beauty counter, and top up using powder, concealer, and highlighter to create a flawless appearance.
Shop Vintage and Vintage Style Clothing
Of course, to rock this look you need to rock some real vintage clothing! Go to vintage fairs, charity shops, and head on over to the Custard Factory in Digbeth to find some key pieces that could become the basis of your entire wardrobe.
Incorporate Retro Pieces and Vintage into a Modern Wardrobe
You don’t have to totally drape yourself in vintage clothing – wear older pieces with newer pieces to keep some of your own style in the mix. We love Traffic People for when it comes to shopping new, retro looking pieces!
Accessories can certainly make an outfit, and there are plenty of ways you can use them to finish off your retro look. Wear peter pan collars, cool and quirky broaches, and don’t forget your cat eye sunglasses on a hot day! Big cocktail rings look great too, as do pearl necklaces. Use your imagination!
The key to rocking this look with confidence is not to copy anybody elses style – simply incorporate pieces your love, both old and new into your outfits to make something spectacular!

Buying clothes for our boyfriends can be very tricky, especially when their tastes are a little unpredictable, and this is why you’re going to need a lot of help when selecting the perfect items for 2014. Some men are more fashion conscious than others, which means they’re not all impossible to buy for. So, if you’d like to pick up on some handy tips and suggestions, give me your full attention and spend the next few minutes reading through all the information I’ve included below. Hopefully then, finding the ideal gifts for both his birthday and Christmas will be much simpler.
1 – Suede Trousers
As the weather is still pretty cold at the moment, opting to purchase clothing made from thicker materials is definitely a good idea. So, scrap those old cotton trousers he’s been wearing and order some made in suede. This material is both durable and stylish, so they’re certain to last him a long time. Plus, if you opt for darker colours like brown or black, they’ll go with almost anything in his wardrobe. Just remember to buy some braces for men by Birtchnells or another reputable retailer to ensure he doesn’t spend most of his time pulling them up.
2 – Silk Shirts
Nothing says luxury and comfort like a silk shirt, and though most of you are probably picturing the frilly things Meat Loaf became renowned for wearing, there’s actually some really cool designed knocking around at the moment that are certain to make him look fantastic. Take care not to rub up against him too much though, because silk is one of the most likely materials to cause a static shock.
3 – Wool or Tweed Suit Jacket
These are really popular at the moment, which means you shouldn’t have to break the bank by purchasing a designer label. There are some really good suit jackets in most high street stores, and so you should head down to your local town or city centre and check them out. Of course, the designer products will be more alluring to the touch, but if you’re only worried about aesthetics, the label inside should be of little concern. Try to pick up something in brown or blue, as these colours are popular during the spring.
4 – Lace Up Boots
When the temperatures are this low, it’s vital your man is covered up as much as possible, so purchasing some leather lace up boots could be the perfect way of keeping his ankles warm. If you opt to purchase real leather, the footwear will obviously be a little more expensive. However, it will also be much more durable and likely to last him twice as long. So, don’t scrimp on footwear ladies, get him something he’ll be able to wear for months, or even years.
5 – Puffa Jackets (fur collar)
If you really want him to look attractive this winter and moving towards the spring, then purchasing a stylish puffa jacket with fur collar is definitely something you should consider. Sure, these jackets will make him look a little bit like a farmer, but that look is very much “in” at the moment, so he’s guaranteed to turn heads wherever you go together.
Well ladies, I hope you’ll now have a few more ideas for the next time you head down to the high street in search of clothing for your boyfriends. We all know they’re hard to satisfy, but with my suggestions and advice, life just got a little bit easier.
See you next time!
Accessorising your eyes is the hottest trend of 2014. I’m not talking smoky eyes or 60’s style eyeliner, I’m talking glasses. Once the prerequisite of the nerd, a good set of glasses are now the biggest trend to grace our face since the fake eyelash.
My Grandma always used to say ‘all beautiful things are kept behind glass’ when referring to my spectacles, something that always beguiled me as a child. It turns out that she was right, as now everyone is choosing to showcase their beautiful peepers with glasses.
There are many styles of glasses available. Even free prescription lenses now come in trendy designs. With such a vast choice available, there has never been a better time to decorate your face.
When considering purchasing a beautiful pair of specs, you need to bear in mind your face shape. Your face shape will ultimately depend on whether your chosen frames will suit you. After all, you don’t want to part with your hard-earned cash to look, dare I say a little silly.
Take a look at those gorgeous celebrities and see which face shape is similar to your own.
Face shapes include:
Oval – Taylor Swift
You’re incredibly lucky, if you have an oval face, as you can pull off almost any frame and style of spectacle!
Square – Jennifer Aniston
Avoid square frames, if you have a beautiful square face, as this can make you look ‘boxy’.
Long – Sarah Jessica Parker
If you have a long face, then it is advisable that you choose glasses with larger frames, but in terms of length rather than width.
Heart –Reese Witherspoon
If you have a gorgeous heart shaped face then you will need to find glasses that balance the width of your face, as your chin will be narrow, but your forehead will be wide. You do not want your new spectacles to highlight your forehead.
Round – Emma Watson
Should you have a lovely rounded face (and by this I mean with less angular features) I would suggest not choosing round frames; add sharp angles to your face. Square and rectangular glasses will balance your face.
In short, if your face is angular with sharp features, choose a rounder frame to soften your face. If your face is rounded, choose frames that are angular.
Other important factors to consider when choosing your specs is your hair colour, skin tones and eye colour. Purple frames can highlight blue eyes even more, but paired with green eyes can look quite bizarre.
New York Fashion Week 2014 have tipped the hottest trends for the upcoming the year and have put glasses in the limelight. Cat eye glasses are back and have moved on from black. Designers are styling them in bright, bold colours. Chunky glasses are making a comeback too, but again, in bold colours. Over-sized round glasses are back, for the retro fashionista as well as superb, extra detailing. Glasses are now being embellished with all sorts of quirky adornments. In short, glasses are fabulous!
2014: Glasses are back, and they are bolder than ever!
Believe it or not, one of the hottest fashion accessories for 2014 is the watch. Although you may think watches are simply the useful accessory that tells you how late you’re running, many celebrities now won’t be seen without one. Surely a watch on your wrist isn’t as fashionable as a Pandora on your wrist though? Well actually, fashion experts say this year nothing is more in fashion than a timepiece. We have a look at why watches are creeping up the fashion hot list and at some of the most coveted brands this season.
They go with everything
They really do go with everything. They’re not like that pair of shoes you were adamant go with every outfit you own, only to be worn once. A watch can be worn at work during the day or on a girl’s night out in the evening. You can pair a watch with jeans and a t-shirt or your most impressive dress. As long as you’ve picked the right watch, of course. A good quality watch that sits pretty on your wrist can be used to finish off any outfit.
The thought of useful fashion may not be an exciting one, but fashion experts beg to differ. This year it is all about how you can get the most out of what you’re wearing, and a watch ticks all the boxes. Not only will you always know what time you stumbled home on Saturday, but you’ll never be late for work again. Watches are also a great way to spark up a conversation with a handsome stranger, who just wants to know the time.
Good watches are timeless
Excuse the pun! However, a good watch is something that you will never have to replace, making it a sound investment. Okay so some things may need updating; you might need a Rado watch battery replacement every couple of years or a clean up of your Michael Kors, but generally a decent watch will last you a lifetime. In fact, watches used to be the most popular heirlooms in generations past, simply because they lasted so long.
Hot brands this year
There are some hot watch brands right now, whose timepieces are coveted by the most fashion conscious celebrities. Here are some ones we think you should look out for:
Michael Kors – Of course this brand was going to make the list! It seems like no one can get enough of the gorgeous rose gold watches that Michael Kors has treated us to. We’ve seen them on TV, in magazines and now you should be seeing one on your wrist.
Rado – This brand have been around since the 1980s and have seen a few successes over the years. However, it’s only really now that these Swiss watches are making it onto every celebrities’ wish-list. If you want a watch that will last and look great, get a Rado.
Marc by Marc Jacobs – Marc Jacobs handbags have always been key players in the fashion world and their watches are no different. Focusing on rose gold (definitely a trend for 2014) and delicate design, their range of watches are to die for.
Next time you dismiss the watch counter on your next shopping trip, think again. Watches are the biggest and best fashion accessory for 2014 and no woman should be without one.
The role of accessories in fashion will always be an important one and they are often the best way to express your individuality. Whether it is a chunky bracelet, oversized shades or that nice clutch bag, it is really up to you as an individual and that is why we are so fascinated and obsessed with them.
Who hasn’t been in the situation where they want to just throw together an outfit without thinking about it too much but so it doesn’t appear lazy or sloppy? It would be easy to guess that many people reading this blog have yearned for that sort of situation. This is when having the right accessories in your collection can really be helpful. Accessories can lift a very plain and ordinary looking outfit into something much more glamorous and classy. There are generally no hard and fast rules about what you can and can’t do with accessories, so experiment as much as you want.
It is worth considering that accessories in fashion are divided into two different categories – the ones we wear and the ones we carry. While accessories that you wear include sunglasses, belts, shoes, shawls and all different sorts of jewellery; accessories that you carry include mainly bags, although things such as purses and umbrellas also count too.
It is handy to have some well-chosen accessories when you need to refresh your wardrobe, but can’t and don’t want to spend money to change all your outfits. Even outfits you have worn time after time will look different if you use the right accessories. We all know that the choices we make concerning the clothes we wear reflect our personality and style, but did you know that the same is true of accessories? It is even possible that accessories highlight this to an even greater extent.
One great type of accessory that can really make you stand out is Monica Vinader bracelets. The Spanish born Vinader’s gold and sterling silver designer charm bracelets epitomise the idea of individuality using accessories. They are exquisitely designed and based on colour, nature and her many travels and feature semi-precious stones hand cut. As well as being loved by customers around the world in general and often given as heartfelt gifts to loved ones, they are also loved by fashion conscious celebrities
The ideas behind Monica Vinader bracelets, like any other charm bracelets, is that you can add, swap and take away parts of the bracelet to reflect how you are feeling or to get a certain look. It can be fun to collect different precious stones in different colours and if you are really interested, there are many different meanings behind each type of stone. It’s that constant change that is possible with charm bracelets that makes them so desirable. If you have enough pendants in your collection, there is no limit to the number of different looks you will be able to achieve, without having to buy a ridiculous amount of separate and completely different bracelets.
It seems that every woman across the land has the same mantra: “I have nothing to wear!.” It seems our wardrobes are full to the brim of pretty dresses, skin tight jeans, dressy-tops, slobbing-out casuals, comfy knits, high heels, ballet pumps, handbags, clutch bags, satchels… the list goes on.
I cannot recall how many times I have opened my wardrobe, declare I have nothing to wear before descending into a spectacular hissy fit moments before hitting the town on a big night out.
The problem, it seems, is that we invest too much money on the wrong pieces. Open your wardrobe and take a look what is inside. I have dresses that I haven’t worn for years, jeans that I can;t fit into, tops from three years ago that aren’t even vaguely fashionable anymore. To be brutally honest, some of my clothes are downright hideous. I have a weird attachment to them. I simply cannot bear to part with half of my wardrobe and I’m almost certain that I am not alone.
What your wardrobe needs is a purge. Once you have purged your wardrobe, it’s time to invest in a range of wardrobe staples that will last you a lifetime. The dilemma of not knowing what to wear will be gone (or at the very least, greatly reduced).
“Wardrobe Staple” is the term used for the basics that your wardrobe needs. These are the timeless pieces that never go out of style and will always make you look amazing. Take a look at this guide, before you purge, and you will see what I mean.
The White Shirt
The white shirt is a timeless classic. It’s cool and crisp, fit for the office with smart, dress trousers and effortlessly chic dressed down with a pair of jeans. A white shirt is often worn by the highest echelons of the fashion world, with Victoria Beckham often branding a white shirt, looking simply effortless when she does. She teams hers with high waisted black trousers, tartan skirts and jeans. Not only is the white shirt chic, it’s versatile too.
The black stiletto is often seen on the feet of every major celebrity. Usually plain and incredibly versatile, they too can be worn with a wide variety of clothing items ranging from glamorous pencil skirts to straight leg jeans and can go from day to night with the slick of some lipstick.
Again, this piece is a serious contender for the hardest working item in your wardrobe. A classic cut can look fabulous with jeans and looks ultra smart when in the office. Feeling smart, without being too overdressed is a part of the blazers chart. Think power dressing, without the 80’s revival.
This piece probably isn’t one for the office but always looks seriously cool. Luxury leather jackets are iconic and look incredible with whatever you choose to team it up with. You can toughen up girlie dress with it or go for an all out fierce look with stilettos and skin tight black skinny jeans. A leather jacket is a must for any it girl, adding a dash of panache to any outfit.
Everyone’ favourite item of clothing has got to be their denim. I adore my jeans. Their versatility is what makes them a wardrobe staple. You can team your blue jeans, leather jacket and stilettos and look seriously cool. On the plus side, they’re super comfortable too. Gone are the days where jeans look scruffy; jeans now have the edge, especially when they are made from good quality denim and have an exquisite cut.
The great thing is about wardrobe essentials is their versatility. Your wardrobe can be your Swiss army knife against the world. The key is to ensure that the staples you purchase are versatile, timeless and of good quality. With these beauties in your wardrobe, never again will you have to scream out “I have nothing to wear!”
It is often said that diamonds are a girl’s best friend but let’s face it; a woman’s best friend is shoes. A personal favourite is the medium sized heel, a must for any budding fashionista that doesn’t want the pain that wearing high heels can cause. The beauty of the high street is that it has caught on to the fact that not all women have tiny, dainty feet (I wish!) and have started to stock a bigger range of larger-sized shoes. With this in mind women of all shapes and sizes can enjoy the benefits of a good old fashioned medium sized heel. The wonderful arrays of shoes that are available on the high street is one of the reasons why I am so desperately poor!
There has always been a myth circulating that you need to ‘go big or go home’. There are so many styles of medium heels that are fabulous. A super cute kitten heel is the fast-track to completing any outfit. There’s a fab range at http://www.katielongshoes.co.uk!
The History of the Heel
Medium sized heels first debuted in the mid-1950s and were depicted as a training heel for young girls before taking over the fashion world and were worn by women of all ages. As fashion is a fickle mistress, they were deemed uncool and were relegated to the back of many women’s wardrobes until their popularity begun to rise again in the 2000s.
These Shoes Are Made For Walking
The wonderful thing about medium sized heels is the ease of walking. As kitten heels tend to come in the perfect size of three inches and under, there is no need to fear breaking an ankle or walking in an ungainly fashion. What’s more, the utterly sublime Audrey Hepburn was a huge purveyor of the medium sized heel which saw their popularity soar during the 1950s. In fact, if you look at any of the great, timeless Hollywood actresses, they certainly didn’t topple over in a pair of sky scraper heels, they always looked the epitome of class, and their enduring beauty is still apparent in 2014. There is nothing more unsightly than seeing someone in a pair of too-high shoes clumsily attempting to walk. If in doubt, do a Hepburn and stick a medium sized heel, which will make you look much more graceful and classy in the long run.
The Healthier Choice
The health benefits of wearing medium-heels are great too. The damage that high heels can cause to the spine is monumental. This is because high heels force the spine into an unnatural shape ultimately making your posture look worse. Bunions are often a problem for women that wear heels that are too high, as well as making your feet look unsightly; the pain can also be unbearable too.
The wonderful thing about this choice of heel is that they will never go out of style. They are the classic choice for any occasion and can complete any outfit. So, not only are they a firm favourite of Audrey, they are also a firm favourite of mine.
Now that the weather’s cold and the mornings are frosty, with a high possibility of rain virtually all the time (and it never fails to disappoint), there’s one fashion staple that everybody could use: the wellington boot. No longer are these boots reserved for farming or outdoorsy types – you can wear them for walks with the dog, trips to the supermarket, and anywhere else you’d like to stop your feet from getting damp. They look much more fashionable too, with brands like Hunter bringing out lovely colours, patterns, and styles. Want to know more about wellies? Here are 12 weird things you didn’t know!
1. To fill a size 10 wellington boot you’d need a whole gallon of custard.
2. Some crazy people fall so in love with their wellington boots, that they name each pair they have with a ‘welly naming ceremony’. I’d call mine: Fred.
3. The very first wellington boots were made for the Duke of Wellington, who requested a boot that would suitable for battle but comfortable at dinner. The result was the kind of welly that we know and love today!
4. Ever heard of ‘welly wanging’? It’s a bit of a mad sport invented by the British, and started in 1917 when soldiers who often fought on the front line got bored.
5. In 2003, a wellington boot race was held in New Zealand, and became the largest wellington boot race of all time with 981 people taking part.
6. In 1900, a millionaire named Nathan Schwab ordered a pair of wellington boots. They weren’t for him though – he wanted them for his dog! Perhaps more money than sense…
7. The biggest welly ever built was a total of 8 meters high, made by the people of North Queensland, Australia.
8. Famous author Oscar Wilde commented on wellies in 1888 when asked about women’s fashion. He praised them for giving women more freedom!
9. In the 20th century, you would have been able to sell your wellies for a pretty penny – rubber was more valuable than silver!
10. Take a sniff of scotch malt whisky. Smell familiar? The Scotch Malt Whisky Society describes their whisky as ‘the colour of golden syrup, with the scent of the inside of a welly boot’. Not a worn welly boot we hope…
11. In 2008 after the Olympics were held in Bejing, the Hunter Boot welly company sent specially made gold boots to every athlete who won a gold medal.
12. Miners in Africa do a ‘welly boot dance’ to cheer them up when they’re feeling low at work.
Interesting, huh? Wellies are the perfect accompaniment to a dreary day; not only will they keep you dry and warm, they’ll look great while doing so. You can buy wonderful designs for both adults and children – just take a look at Wellies and Worms to see for yourself! If you want more freedom to do the things you want to do, take a tip from Oscar Wilde and get yourself some wellies.
